Cohen Hillel Academy’s mission for STEM education is to promote STEM literacy for all students and provide a culture of inquiry while grounded in Jewish values. STEM education at Cohen Hillel Academy instills interest and excitement in the STEM disciplines in all students, kindergarten through eighth grade, and is interdisciplinary and integrated throughout the curriculum.
To help reach this mission, students are learning to use the engineering design process to solve problems. The first stage is Ask questions to define the problem. (Ask what is the challenge? What are the limits? How can you solve it?) Step 2 is to imagine and explore the possibilities. (Find out what others have done. Gather materials and play with them). Step 3 is to develop a plan to solve the problem. (Students think up lots of ideas. Pick one and make a plan, make a drawing or model). Create is the building step. (Students use their plan to build their idea). Students then Test their models and designs. The last step is for students to improve their design. (Think about how your design could be improved or better. Modify your design and try again. This process can cycle multiple times to end up with a strong solution to the given problem or challenge.
